All About Kundalini Yoga!
What is Kundalini Yoga? Kundalini Yoga is an uplifting blend of spiritual and physical practices, it incorporates movement, dynamic breathing techniques, Meditation, Mudra, and the chanting of Mantra. It can be challenging in many ways, but it is great fun, and always doable!
What can it do for me? Make you feel amazing, really quickly! It strengthens the physical body and the nervous system, and also balances the endocrine (hormonal) system. It works from the inside out to bring about brain and hormonal balance. It also works on clearing the subconscious mind, which can help us clear emotional blocks that are deep seated. It is an enormously healing and transformational practice. This strengthening, clearing and balancing of the system brings us into a place where we have more energy, personal power, resistance to illness, and emotional stability.
How does it differ from other styles of yoga? It's all about the Energy! Less involvement with physical postures, stretching and making shapes with the body. The kriyas are a specific set of exercises that generate energy, organize that energy within the system, and deliver you to a specific energetic state — depending on the intention of the Kriya - particularly one of greater awareness. Also within the practice are built-in moments of stillness where we sit quietly and awaken to our Self. The breathwork within the kriyas is powerful and the Meditations often involve movements unlike traditional silent Meditation. The kriyas work on strengthening your nervous system, balancing your glandular system, purifying the body and calming the mind.
Is it safe? Yes! If you have any health issues, please speak to your GP before joining ANY Yoga class. Although Kundalini Yoga can at times be challenging, you will be encouraged to meet yourself exactly where you are right now, and take rests, and adapt as you need to. As the body and systems becomes stronger, you will find things easier very quickly.
Why white clothes? The colour white expands the aura by 18 inches, protects from negative projections, deflects negativity, helps lift depression / uplift mood, and teaches one to be more graceful in one's environment by heightening awareness of one's surrounding. It is recommended to wear white or light colours while practicing Kundalini to achieve better results, but it is not required. Try it if you feel drawn to it!
Why a head cover? During Kundalini yoga, covering the head with a non-static, natural cloth (like cotton or silk) and with the hair up is recommended. The idea is to move the energy upwards and keep it in the body rather than allowing it to leave through the head, or crown centre. It is also not required...again, try it and see how it feels!
Why all the chanting? Is it religious? No. Yoga is not a religion. There is a spiritual element to this practice. The goal is to get connected to our higher Self, our inner wisdom; to free us from the trap of our chatter-filled mind and see beyond the illusions of our day-to-day drama. When we call upon God, we call, not upon an external God, but upon that wisdom, or infinite intelligence, that is within each of us.
Why gongs? The gong is traditionally used in the Kundalini Yoga tradition as a healing tool: it is like a primitive form of ultrasound in the fact that the sound vibrations of the gong move through your body-mind clearing blocks, releasing tension and bringing harmony and deep healing to your whole body.
Why a sheepskin? Traditionally, many yogis have used animal skins to sit on during yoga and meditation. A sheepskin is recommended for meditation, as it creates an insulation between the yogi and the magnetic pull of the earth. However, anything in a natural fibre is also suitable. I have a wool Yoga mat with no actual skin on it, they are widely available now.
'The process of growth through Kundalini Yoga is a natural unfolding of your own nature. The blocks to that growth are your attachments to the familiarity of the past, and your fear of the expanded Self. As you practice Kundalini Yoga you will grow. Like a snake you will need to shed old skins to be more of who you are'.
